Hi,

I'm new and wondered if anyone could help please? :o

My son has bought Need For Speed Underground 2 but it will not run on our PC. I contacted EA and they said we need a new graphics card. Ours apparently is an S3 Pro Savage SA26 KM133 if that means anything to anyone :-)

But apparently it is integrated onto the MS-6340 motherboard and no-one seems to know whether it is upgradeable or whether we have to buy a new system (for one game??) :-(

If anyone could help it would really be appreciated. I've tried all the search engines and contacted MSI with no luck.

Thank you very much

Debbie :)

The Microstar MS-6340 is quite an old motherboard; however the specifiactions show it has an AGP slot, for a graphics card. I can't find anything that says it has graphics integrated into the motherboard.
How old is the PC? And do you know the speed/type of the processor?

The processor speed and type can be found by right-clicking on My Computer, choosing 'Properties'. A window will appear containing the processor and RAM information.

Upgrade graphics card...

Hi,

Thanks very much for your help.

I've checked the spec altho its a bit weird. I did a dxdiag on it on Sat and it said 224 mb ram (I guess 256 - 32 mb for the graphics card). Today it says 96 mb?? and it is running real slow. I've just ordered 512 to perk it up a bit but that won't help the graphics card.

Its a Tiny computer circa 2000 AMD Athlon XP1800+

So what do you think? Someone told me that Tiny made some computers not upgradeable, but apparently they've gone bust - helpful!!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Debbie

tiny pc's

Tiny went bust and came back, then they went bust again and came back, and then bust again and now back again!

You should be able to turn off the on-board graphics in BIOS and if you have an AGP slot put in an AGP card, if no slot then you could buy a PCI graphics card, but they run slow, don’t however confuse this with PCI-E as they are totally different.

Not sure if that help's or not?

Tiny did not make PCs, they made bricks.

Sorry but spending any money on that PC is a bit of a waste ... ;)

Yes you do have "on-board" graphics ... although you could add an AGP graphics card the problem will be finding one ... There is an added 'problem' that your AGP slot is only upto 4x, called AGP2 ... be careful you do not get anything better, it will do damage to the system.

Again, my advice, buy a new PC ... but look around PCReview for specs ... and ask us if you do find one you like to pull it to pieces before parting with any money.

how 2

Tiny seem to have had a bit of bad business with their recent up's & down's:eek:
But with a PC that's nearly 6 years old it may be easier and more economical to buy a new pc? If you want advice on doing that, then you have come to the right place.:D

Hi everyone,

Thanks very much - maybe you're right - especially as I've got another couple of kids that'll be gaming soon - altho' with 4 kids I haven't got masses to spend.

I noticed Dell are selling systems pretty cheap at the mo as long as you don't get persuaded to have all their 'hard-sell' upgrades. What would you guys recommend?

If you go for one of their "cheap" systems you is gonna get another Tiny PC with a Dell name ... ;)

Find and independent builder localely ... it will cost you more, but the reason will be because of better components. Run it by use first though. ;)

You'll need a budget of £400-£500 to get a half decent "games PC" ... an X-Box may be a good alternative. :)

new pc

How much do you want to spend?
Once you have worked out your budget, then have a look at what you want to do with it. Posting a new thread on the forum should get a healthy response!:thumb: :D

NFSU2 is a **VERY** Graphics intensive game. You cant buy a budget system and expect it to run - you would just waste your money i'm afraid.

In a new PC thats going to run this game make sure you have the following:

1Gb (1024Mb) DDR/DDR2 RAM
S-ATA (Serial) Hard Drive
At least a nVidia GeForce 6600GT graphics card

Try and get a system based on Athlon 64 (socket 939) rather than Sempron or Pentium. Avoid anything with any mention of Celeron LIKE THE PLAGUE.

if so, should be fine.
