The standard Search tools (accessible through context menu) is not working.
It is an well know bug which is (as far as I know fixed with SP2).

When I installed now my WinXP again (after a crash) and applied SP2 I had to
notice that the search tool is still NOT working.

Hmmm. on my last WinXP system it was working. I can't remember if I applied a
separate fix/patch for it.

Is there such a patch for it ? What is the name KBxxxxx ?

How can I otherwise repair the built-in search function ?

Scroll down to:
Search - Doesn't Work

Also...

%windir% = C:\WINDOWS if Windows is installed on the C: drive. I have no
idea about your machine. Paste %windir% into Start | Run click OK and see
what opens.

Try this. It has worked for other folks.

1. Go to C:\Windows\srchasst or %windir%\srchasst and delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

regsvr32 /u %windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

3. Go to C:\Windows\Inf or %windir%\Inf right click srchasst.inf and
click install.
