How to "unlock" cell?

I have a spreadsheet that, when printed, fills an 8.5" X 11" page. I
added a date at the top, but the format I want to use fills the cell
with ######### unless I stretch the cell out... but that makes the
spreadsheet print on two pages now. How can I have that one cell, all
by itself at the top, be wider than other cells in the same column?

You would have to merge it with other cell(s) on its left and/or right.
Highlight the cells, select Format, Cells, Alignment tab, select Merge
cells.

Merged cells can cause no end of problems. Could you perhaps just look at the
"Center across Selection" feature? You may prevent future complications.

Really? I use merged cells all the time, have done so for years, never
had any difficulties. The OP's question is exactly the sort of
situation where merging cells is a good solution. What problems have
you experienced with this feature?

(Is "Center Across Selection" a new thing in Excel 2002? In 2K and
before, I can only find the "Merge and Center" tool.)
