You can uninstall Messenger if you have XP SP1a installed, although the
files remain.

Perhaps you can then just install 4.7 at this point, and it will overwrite
5, although downgrading of any software is never recommended.

Greetings Sachi,

If you install Windows Messenger 4.7 overtop, it will remove Windows Messenger 5 after
prompting. You can redownload Windows Messenger 4.7 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp

However, if you wish to do it "by the book", you can uninstall Windows Messenger 5 by first
making sure that Windows Messenger is shut down (right-click its icon in the notification
area/system tray, and choose Exit), then click Start, then Run, and type in the following:
msiexec /x {4A432C6C-1E20-4266-95D1-5782349C6C62}
then click OK and after uninstallation, reinstall Windows Messenger 4.7 from the above link.

I attempted to uninstall via the instructions provided
but received the following message:

"This action is only valid for products that are
currently installed"

Any suggestions?
