How do I uninstall the current ATI drivers so I can
upgrade to a newer version? I have tried to uninstall
the video adapter (ATI 8500DV) but when I reboot it just
keeps coming back. I have tried uninstalling the ATI
software but it keeps finding the ATI card when I
reboot. How can I change to the generic VGA driver so I
can install the new ATI drivers?

First, follow Cari's advice. In the very unlikely event that it doesn't work
for you, the ATI web site has a utility that removes every trace of its
drivers.

To install a new ATI driver set, ignore the directions they give concerning
stripping XP down to the Generic VGA driver.

1) Using Control Panel|Add/Remove Software, remove all ATI software
2) Reboot, letting XP install its generic ATI driver. Don't worry about
this. It will happen EACH time you attempt to remove ATI driver. Just
install the newest ATI driver set on top of it.
3) Install the newest ATI driver set according to their directions(except
for the directions to strip the system down to generic vga driver),
rebooting when prompted to.

This works every time for me.

By the way, if you have never installed an ATI driver set on XP before, and
the only driver on HD is the generic ATI driver installed by XP during
initial installation of XP, don't even try to remove the ATI driver. Just
install the driver (from the ATI install set CD or the ATI software you
downloaded from their site) right on top of it.
