I have an old monitor and the brightness is really dim! I have the
monitor button for Brightness and Contrast all the way up and it is
still DARK.

1) Is there a piece of software that will brighten the monitor beyond
the limits of the hardware? I have tested out the calibration
software, but nothing with brightening capabilities. It also does not
have Gamma or something.

2) Is there a way of doing this with a piece of Hardware outside the
monitor (like a screen or something) to brighten it?

I don't really have the money to buy a new monitor, so this is why I
am asking...sucks to be me, huh?

Thanks

Hi David. I have a Mag DJ530 Monitor and have a the same problem.
Fortunately the onboard ATI chipset allow me to adjust the GAMMA
so this compensate very well. Do you have such a setting on your video
card/chipset?

Most monitors like TV's have internal controls that you can use after you
take the case off ( carefull - the screwdriver must be long and its stem
insulated) but if those controls have been put to full (which i doubt) than,
sorry but the monitor has had it.

Just be VERY aware that the on the inside of the monitor, there are
dangerous voltages, including lethally high voltages in and near the
flyback transformer, rectifier and the CRT. Voltages that can arc
through an insulated screwdriver and remain even after the monitor has
been disconnected from any power source. (The CRT acts as a giant
high-voltage condensor).

Monitor repair is best done by somebody with more electronics
experience than assembling and upgrading computer CPU boxes.

Know exactly where the internal adjusting controls are, and what each
does. Misadjustment of the wrong one can cause permanent damage to the
monitor, cause excess X-ray generation, or distort the screen image
even further.

No, the SUB-BGT has not been moved, I think. I am guessing that the
SUB - BGT means - SUB BRIGHTNESS. I have marked off it's initial spot
with a black marker, so WHEN I move it, I have a reference point to
move it back if things go amiss. I just want a little more brightness
to make this thing workable. Thanks

You are right. I haven't done anything yet, but I hope turning one of
the 'pots' in either direction for the SUB - BGT is going harm me. I
just want the brightness up is all.
