DNS must be on a DC in order to be AD intergrated.

Win2KAD, Win2003 DNS server.
DNS server is not a DC.

On Zone, I click on properties and on general tab it displays 'not ad
integrated'.
I go to 'advanced' and option to integrate is gray-out.

Must I install DNS on a DC to enable ad integrated zones ? How can I enable
'ad integrated zone' if that option is gray out in the primary DNS server ?

Preferably I'd prefer to keep DNS Server separated from DC role.
I am aware DNS integrated will make DNS records reside on AD.
Are you worried about performance? It's not an issue, usually. And
there are advantages in using AD Integrated.

Cheers,

Cliff

Ok, if I need to make the DNS box a DC, in my case or I need to downgrade
the Win2003 DNS server to WIn2K before running DC promo then. Otherwise I
would have a Win2003 DC on Win2K AD domain and I don't think that would be a
supported environment...

Sure it is. There are a few minor pre-requisites (service pack levels and
AdPrep/ForestPrep)
but you can certainly have a Win2003 DC among your Win2000 DCs.
