Most likely hardware. Boot a linux live CD like Knoppix or
a Bart PE CD and see what happens with the sound with
that. That will prove whether its hardware or software.

I searched and searched for that answer but rod knows it off the top of his
head! He is so amazing, I heard girls want to date him now.

If only one speaker fails at a time then it is in all probablility a
Hardware problem. A software problem would usually affect both speakers.

except when the mixer has the balance to the left or right on one of the
pots

soul-- try these:
1-compare headphones sound with speakers when the problem is occurring.
2-is system software up to par? Re-installed OS in last 6-8 mos?
3-update sound-card drivers. Check settings on the sound control panel.
4-is the problem happening with one particular player s/w? Ex: try
iTunes or Quicktime instead of wmp, etc. Is the problem source
streaming,
hd file or CD?
5-ribbon cable connectors ar notorious problem sources on laptops.
If you're comfortable opening up the case, disconnect all power and
other external devices, re-seat all connectors and plug-in cards,
including RAM,
BUT disconnect the internal system battery first and protect against
static discharge.
6-listen towards the end of a baseball game for the fat lady singing.
