My computer running windowsxp media edition sort of
lockups up. It's not completely locked up. You can still
move the mouse, but you can't click on anything. And if
you hit cont-alt-delete, nothing happens. If you could at
the computer, you can see the harddrive light blink every
couple seconds. It's obviously doing something, but I
don't know what. I'll be working and all of the sudden
I'll notice I can't do anything and it will be doing what
I've already described. If I hold in the power button and
then restart, windows doesn't complain that it wasn't shut
down properly. It just restarts. I have checked the event
viewer. Sometimes I will have an error about sbp2port
which I looked up and it says that this is a 1394 device.
The error says that Device,, didn't respond in the timeout
period. But I get the lock up without this error message
and I get the lockup without this drive attached even.
This whole problem started a week and a half ago, when I
ran Quattro Pro which came pre-installed. In fact, even
time I run that program, I'll get the lock-up. I tried
running it yesterday and for a little while it worked. And
then I hit the tab key and the whole program disappeared.
There was no warning. No "do you want to save your work."
No nothing.
Is something on my harddrive corrupted? Is it something to
do with memory? I ran system file checker the other day
and that didn't help. I have Norton Ghost Image, should I
try restoring that? Should I use HP's restore program?
Could there be something wrong with the registry? Is there
a registry checker program?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
