I have a new computer. I have used Outlook minimally on the old one but have entered a lot of contacts, addresses, telephone numbers, etc that I would like to move to the new one. I do not have a disc burner on the old one, only floppies. I have tried to understand the import/export rules in the help sections but these do not address my problem. How can I simply copy the contacts folder to a floppy paste them into Outlook contact on the new computer?? Or in similar simple fashion. Thanks.

Create a new PST file. Note it's name and location.
Copy your Contacts Folder into this new PST file.
Close Outlook.
Copy this new PST file onto a floppy. It should fit.
Copy it onto your other hard drive and remove its read only attribute.
Open it in Outlook.

I created a backup.pst file in explorer under local settings\applications\microsoft\outlook. But can't get the contacts folder out of outlook to this folder. I can only copy to another .pst folder created within Outlook so it seems. And using export and this new backup.pst file the wizard seems to go through the steps but the contacts items are not in the folder in explorer.

You can't create a PST file in explorer. You can only create one in Outlook
That's what I told you to do. Just follow the steps I posted.

OK Russ I did exactly as you advised. I created a new subfolder in outlook in the folder list (Outlook today-Personal Folders) and copied the contacts folder to that folder. The information copied to this new folder "New .pst". You said note the location which is obvious in Outlook but nowhere else. I even created the same file name on my hard drive under Documents and Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and then asked the Outlook Wizard to export the information to the "new.pst" folder on the hard drive. But this wizard has no connection with the hard drive. All of this is in Outlook and I can't copy the information to a floppy out of Outlook. How do I get it out of Outlook onto my C drive where it can be copied to a floppy and then taken to the new machine??

No you didn't. I did not tell you to create a new subfolder.
I told you to create a new PST file.
File > New > Outlook Data File...

Was able to get the pst folder setup and the data apparently transferred to this folder on my c: drive and then onto a floppy. I tried to open it to check for the contents but windows puts up a warning that this could cause problems with my system. "The files are used by the operating system and various programs. Editing or modifying could damage your system". Is there no way to view these before transferring to the new Outlook? And if so what program would I open the folder with?
LJB

You can only open it with Outlook. Just open it in the new version of
Outlook. You won't be transferring anything just by opening it. Once you're
sure it has the data you want, copy it into the new version.

How do you do this in Outlook 97 (Windows 98SE) where I have the major files I want to transfer to Outlook 2002 on XP OS

LJB

Use the same instructions I already posted. As I recall, the command in
Outlook 97 was File > New > Personal Folders file... but it's been 5 years
since I've seen Outlook 97.
