Push it. One of the following five things will happen:

(a) The button will do exactly what the clear, explicit label on the button
said it would.
(b) The button will do exactly what the cryptic, obscure, stylized symbol on
the button said it would.
(c) The button will do exactly what the label used to say it would before
the label wore off.
(d) The button will do nothing at all.
(e) The button will do whatever it damn well pleases, regardless of what it
should do.

How to deal with the results:

(a) Keep this appliance. It's rare and useful.
(b) This one is fashionable and useless. Sell it and buy one that does (a).
(c) This one works well, but is at least three weeks old and thus obsolete.
Begin planning for its replacement.
(d) This one is broken. Repair it or throw it away.
(e) This one is computer-controlled. Learn to live with it. It's good
practice for marriage.
