How to temporarily "exit" or stop WD

I don't like, or need, programs like this running constantly...for instance,
when I'm doing video editing, I like to have as few programs in memory as
possible. With MS Antispyware, all I had to do was right-click it's System
Tray icon and select Exit to shut it down. But with WD, I find no such
feature...it doesn't have a System Tray icon (at least not on my system) and
even opening up the "windowed" portion of the program seems to show no option
for actually shutting down, or exiting, the program altogether. If I'm
correct, there seem to be at least three new services showing up in Task
Manager that I assume are part of WD running. So I'd like some way to
completely exit this program when I don't want, or need, it running.

Hello Morbius,

if you open Defender and click on the little arrow beside the Question
mark there is where you find 'Exit" Defender!!
Not so a good place to put it!!!

Real Time protection and scanning are both provided by the system service
Windows Defender. The UI and the notification area icon related to it are
unnecessary except when you want to interact directly with the program.

By default, no icon is visible except when user input is needed.

Microsoft staff have posted that they now intend to allow display of the
icon as an option, in some later build.

Tom,

I have tried this, but it leaves Defender processes/services running, as I
can still locate them in Task Manager. What I'm looking for is a way to say
"Shut this thing completely down", which used to just be the "Exit" option on
the MS Antispyware tray icon. Nothing short of manually selecting and
stopping these individual services seems to tell Defender to shut all the way
down.

You can't exit it at present but you can keep it from starting when you boot
by deleting "c:\program Files\windows Defender\msascui.exe" -hide from the
registry. Loaded From :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Run

Then you can start it manually. To stop it you will have to do it from task
manager.
