How to suppress Temp files?

Recently, I noticed that TMP files (e.g., xyz..xls~RF3926fb4.TMP) appear
in My Documents whenever I use Excel program.
I did not see that before. They started to appear very recently. It seems
that I did something wrong..
Could some advise me how to suppress appearing TMP files? (they are
supposed to be written as invisible files). I am suing 2003Excel under
WinXP Pro SP2..

They are temp files created when you create or open an existing
document. Open any explorer window and perform the following tasks:

On the Menu bar; click Tools and select Folder Options
Click on the View tab and select "Do not display hidden folders or
files"
