So..I want to sum a column, but only consider the cell's value in this sum if
a cell on the same line has an entry in a different column? Hope that makes
sense. Tried reading through the sumif explanation, but can't figure it out.
Can someone please help me?

hi
what is the column to sum?
what is the entry on the same line in the other column?
what is the other column?

I have column E that contains dollar amounts. I'd like to sum these items
only if something is entered in a different column..column L which contains
dates. Is that what you mean? Thanks for being so quick...this is great!

Perfect! Thank you! Yes, I believe that worked! My report has nearly 5000
lines, so I checked it by choosing just a few lines. Thanks again!

hi
yes that is exactly what i mean. i think L. Howard Kittle beat me to it. he
has a good formula that might work. try that. i did. and it works.

Can you take a stab at this for me? I'd like to search in column H for one
of 9 or 10 words (call it w1); then add their same line, column E, which is a
currency field, so that I can repeat this for each word, having totals for
each word.

hi
off to the side create a small table. you will need a formula similar to the
sumif that work for each word. you can then sum the sums for a grand total.
