How to subtract a number from a Mergefield?

When I use the merge field on it's own-it pulls my external data correctly. When I try to subtract a hard coded number from my mergefield, it does not work. I've tried many many variations including using the ctrl+f9 and typing in my mergefields. I either get a syntax error, or a formula not ended error, or it just does nothing. I need to subtract my mergefield from a number and the number itself is not a merge field. For example:

${ = {50130}-{MERGEFILED GTOT_AWARD_AMT_GIFT }} this does not work

{=50130-{ {MERGEFIELD GTOT_AWARD_AMT \*MERGEFORMAT }}} this also does not work

What am I missing?
