After some upgrade I started getting this annoying screen that I am
continually having to click on in order to see what I was working on. I read
somewhere that TweakUI for Windows XP (Powertoys) gave instructions to stop
it but when I follow the instructions it doesn't fix the problem. I would
appreciate it tremendously if someone could tell me how to get rid of it
permanently. Does anyone know which upgrade caused it to start? I knew which
one caused the problem maybe I could uninstall it.
Thank you,
Nick C.

It would help if you said exactly what was popping up.

But assuming that it is a Messenger spam being sent by
people who have discovered that they can send spam without
you having to be using your email, they send messages using
a tool designed for IT managers inside a corporation to
notify the staff of system conditions.

Best thing for you to do is TURN THE FIREWALL ON.

Sorry - thought everybody must be getting this popup after a recent update.
It is a blue Windows looking screen that shows my name, number of unread
messages, and number of programs running. It also has an option for turning
the computer off. I have to click on my name in order to see the desktop. It
also appears after my screensaver shuts off so I am perpetually having to
click on my name in order to get a normal screen again. If you are familiar
with Tweak UI/Powertoys for Windows XP, they describe the problem under
"logon" - supposedly if I check the box that says, "Logon automatically at
system startup", I will stop getting that screen but I have checked the box
and I am still getting the screen. Under "Description" for the logon box it
says, "Check the "Logon automatically at system startup" box to bypass the
initial logon dialog box by using the values provided in the User name and
Password sections. To supress autologon, hold the shift key while the system
is starting."

I also made the mistake of setting a password which is another option in
Tweak UI under logon so now every time I turn on my computer I get a message
saying something like I have the wrong password. Luckily if I click OK, it
lets me continue so I can then click on my name on that blue screen I get
and everything works normally from that point on. I would like to undo that.
Maybe System Restore would be worthwhile to at least get rid of that problem
but I don't know what I would lose so I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Here's some info on PowerToys and Tweak UI in case you are unfamiliar with
them.
PowerToys are additional programs that developers work on after the product
has been released to manufacturing, but before the next project has begun.
These toys add fun and functionality to the Windows experience!

Toys released for Windows XP Client:

Tweak UI
Provides access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP
default user interface. There are many settings and options that you can
only set from Tweak UI. You can setup your mouse to your liking by setting
click speed, hover sensitivity, etc. You can also customize many Explorer
settings, taskbar settings, My Computer settings, and a wide variety of
other settings.

Thanks for the info on the Messenger spam though - I was just reading about
this problem today for the first time and was wondering how to stop it If
you can help me with this "initial autologon dialog box" I would appreciate
it tremendously. It is really getting on my nerves.
Nick
