My teenage son's XP system is suffering from pop-up ads
for porn sites and such (go figure) even without a browser
running. I've gone through the task manager and the
services manager to see what's running and I don't see
anything malicious. I've heard they could be sending them
through an open socket? I've got a router/firewall. I
don't want to have to wipe out his system and re-install
and I don't want to have to run some pop-up blocker
software (which does work but they want money nor do I
want to *have* to have something running to block them).
It just seems to me that there ought to be a way to keep
these from occurring without having to run something else -
or is it the pop-up blocker software makers doing the pop-
ups so that we have to buy their software? Seems fishy to
me. Any help is appreciated.

The only way to stop popups is with a popup stopper program or a firewall
that supports stopping popups. There are free programs on the internet. Do a
search and install one.
Popups also install programs on your computer to make popups appear
anytime - connected to the internet or not. Go to the url below and
download and install ad-aware to remove the problem programs that were
installed on your computer.

the firewall options is the best.... you could also go to start/run , type
"services.msc" ( without brackets ) and go to the service called "messenger"
, disable this one and this will solve the prob aswell

and stay off porn sites .

I use a freeware product called "ad-aware"...
Search for it in google... the manufacturer is lavasoft.
Be sure to update it too.
It will eliminate any & all pop ups... period.
From your registry, temps, etc.
This should help.
