How to stop disconnect from Internet

Hi all :-) W2K SP4

I recently installed the W2K on a new hard drive and all is working well,
except that, when the machine has been sitting idle for a while, when I go
to access a newsgroup I get an error dialog box that says an error has
occurred. It is the same type of box you get when you have not properly
setup your server reference in an account for a group and it can't find any
groups or that server.

However, when I restart the computer, the connection is good again and no
error messages. I was told that I need to disable the disconnect or some
such for the ethernet so that it would not keep disconnecting when idle for
a while, but, they could not remember how to do that.

I am totally new to W2K and all it's variables, and don't want to go
venturing too much on my own just yet, thus, I would truly appreciate it if
someone could tell me where I should look to find the place for this
adjustment, or if there is another means to do so.

Jan :)

Hi Jan:

I am not aware of a setting like this for ethernet connections, only
dial-up. Are you sure you are being disconnected from the your network?
Does this behavior only occur in your newsgroup reader, or does it
occur for all your network-aware applications? Can you ping other
machines on your network? Is your internet gateway a using dial-up
connection?

No...I don't have dial-up...we have Verizon DSL. There is only one other
machine that uses the same hookup, and although they also have W2K, it does
not have the problem. I just newly installed the W2K a few days ago on an
added hard drive, and it does seem to happen mostly with my the newsreader,
Outlook Express. But, it does happen at times with the Internet as well.
Sometimes, when I go to open the Internet I get the 'Page cannot be
displayed' error. Generally, this is when the system has been idle for a
couple of hours or more.

However, just before I answering your reply, I was composing a rather long
e-mail, and when I went to check this newsgroup, I got the error, as well as
for the others I tried. Thus, I had to restart the machine.

This happens on and off during the day, depending on how long the machine
sits idle. I never leave it active with the Internet, I always close IE when
I'm not using it for a specific reason.

I have had problems trying to update some of my programs, such as SpyBot, Ad
and such, when they say they can't connect. But, as soon as I restart the
machine, they can connect with no problem.

I had Wine for several years, but, I did not experience this problem. I
thought perhaps that, not being familiar at all yet with the WOK, there was
some adjustment I needed to make to prevent this from happening.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance, I truly do appreciate it.

Jan:

Assuming your other machine does not have the same connection issues,
the next thing I would look at would be the network interface card
itself. Here is one thing you should check:

Go to "Network Connections" in the Control Panel. Open the appropriate
connection. Select "Properties", select the button "Configure" next to
your NIC. Select the "Power Management" tab. Uncheck the "Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power" option. Hit "OK".

If this still doesn't solve the problem, verify that that your hub or
switch is operating correctly. Try swapping the ports the computers are
plugged into. If this still doesn't help, it may be a problem with the
NIC itself. As a last resort, I would try swapping the NIC with the one
in the good computer.

I have made the changes in the Power Management and unchecked the "Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power", and I will see if this will
help. I'll check back with you and let you know if your suggestions resolve
the issue.

Thank you very much for your help and patience, I really appreciate it. :-)

Hi Matt :-)

Here is the error message now: Unknown error has occurred. When I click the
details, here is what it says:

Configuration:
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005

I researching this Code, I found this site that refers to the error:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;224535

It does look like the error and Code setup that I'm getting, but, as I said
before, I have a DSL connection, not dial-up. I don't know for sure if this
is just an OE problem or not, as it does not happen when logged on as the
Administrator, only as a User.

Don't know if it will make a difference, but, I have unchecked the LAN
setting and it now show Any available, so I guess I'll see how that goes.

Thank you for your time and help. I really appreciate it. :-)

Jan :)
