I disabled the automatic updates because it was setting off the
firewall too often (I haven't found enough details to make the proper
firewall rules). There are still attempts to connect to microsoft IP
addresses. What else can be causing these connection attempts? I
don't use instant messaging, my browser is firefox, and thunderbird is
my email/usenet reader.

Thanks.

Andy here's one possibility, XP also has a service which contacts MS for
TIME updates ... keeps your PC time exact!

silly me, thought this was an XP group! W2K has a time service too. Is
that causing the problem? If not you may want to go view services and
see if something else there is the culprit!

Yikes. Millions of services. Get back to you later.

But I run a pretty tight ship. Nothing gets installed without triple
checking. I'd be surprised if it was a service that I installed.
Perhaps Windows has default services, but it will take some time to
check these out.

Thanks.

BTW there is no need to use microsoft for time service
neither in w2k ( sntp ) neither in xp ( ntp ).

one can use NTP servers from xx.pool.ntp.org
