When I logon a Windows 2000 Pro, it came up with

"Unable to log you on because the netlogon services is not running on this
machine" .... I am unable to logon local administrator :(

Would it be possible to start the service in Safe mode? But I am unable to
logon safe mode either.....

Try the Recovery Console (boot from CDROM and choose R(repair)).

Do:

listsvc

If NetLogon is listed but not listed as Boot, System, or Automatic
then change it to Automatic (I think that is correct anyway).

If it isn't listed as STOPPED or MANUAL then you have some
other problem.

Darn - but at least you proved that no (fool) one had
STOPPED the service.

Try this: A repair install -- be sure to use repair and
do NOT do a NEW install or install into another directory.

Recognize you shouldn't do this without a backup but it
generally works.
