Could someone help me on how to split a project in half. I am having issues with creating a DVD. But first I am not able to save this project as an DV-AVI file it fails. I have another post, "Help trying to burn an mm2 file to DVD" My system is a 2.8gb 120gb hd 1gb memory, NTFS file system, all windows updates, except .net and messanger... I have scan disked, defraged ect. Verfied all files over and over again. I was able to burn smaller projects fine. This one has over 500 pic's and is currently 41 minutes long. I have checked the QASF update and I still get teh same old generic error message. Cannot save movie... la de da... I have read posts that someone made even a longer movie. I am normally very good at this stuff, but I am stuck. I have gone to Papa Johns website and did not find any help.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

It sure sounds like you're at the point of having to spit the project into a
couple parts, and then add the parts together.

The easiest way to do it depends on your project.... I'd be glad to comment
if you email a copy of your project file... I don't need any of your source
files.

John,

Thank you, I e-mail the project file to you this morning. I will be checking back on this often. I would like to note that while this was in the process of "saving" this project to a DV-AVI I went to the drive and in the folder you could actually see the file and the size was growing. But I find it hard to believe that it would take up 120gb of drive space before it fails!!

Please advise once you have viewed this file.
Thank you again!!!

Kevin

Kevin,

Just to let you know that I received your project file and just opened it in
Movie Maker 2. It's playing fine in the preview mode and it looks pretty
easy to split into sub-projects.

At 42 minutes in overall length, it would need about 8 to 9 GB of hard drive
space in total for a DV-AVI file....

The failures may be related to your memory, not your hard drive.... see how
it goes when the project is split into two parts... looks like that'll be
enough splitting.

John,

I have a 120gb hd that is free that I am trying to save this on. It goes
for about an hour and it fails. Any suggestions?

Kevin,

Here's one way:

Open the FRIDAY1 project in MM2.

First save a copy of the project file as FRIDAY1-A. You have a pretty clean
break at the 14min:15 second point on the timeline. If you save it up to
that point - at the end of the TEST0206 clip ... delete everything after
that point (all video clips, music and title overlays). Save that project
file and use it to render part A to a DV-AVI file named FRIDAY1-A.... it'll
need a 1.25 second Dissolve transition later on when combining with part B.

Reopen the full FRIDAY1 project. Save a copy of the project as FRIDAY1-B.
Note that the music file 07 Can't Stop Now clip starts at 0:14:16:73 ....
and that the zero point of part B will be the beginning of the HEADACHE
clip, which is 0:14:14.13... so the music in part B will start at the
difference in position between them, at 0:02:60. Note also that the CAN'T
STOP NOW title overlay clip starts at the beginning of your TEST0031 video
clip.

Now delete all the video clips, music, and title overlay clips from the
first part of the project, all the stuff you have in the part A project
file. In deleting, I'd start with the title overlays, then the music, and
finally the video clips.

The music and title overlays won't move to the left on the timeline when you
delete the video clips.... so grab the whole batch of music clips at once
and move them so they start at 0:02:60. Grab the batch of overlay clips and
slide them left so your CAN'T STOP NOW title overlay clip starts at the
beginning of your TEST0031 video clip.

Render part B to a second DV-AVI file...

Add the two DV-AVI files together in a new project and add the 1.25 second
Dissolve transition between them.... that'll be your new final project file.

If the second part needs further splitting into sub-projects, there's no
points as neat as the first split, so make one sub-project with just the
music track, and the other one with all the video clips and title
overlays....

If part B without the music doesn't render, then split it in two like you
did the first one above.... it'll be a lot easier without the music.... they
add those parts together and overlay the music.

If you have problems doing the project divisions, worst case..... I'll email
the ones I made here. I saved each of the sub-projects as I went through
your big one.

Lots of luck with it.

Hi Kevin,

Glad the sub-projects worked for you.... doing it on your project inspired
me to add a new fee-based service for anyone who finds themselves in need a
that kind of assistance. I put the info on the Problem Solving > Can't Save
a Movie page of my site.

Sonic's MyDVD version 4.5 came pre-installed on my Toshiba laptop, now a
year old... it's the only DVD authoring/burning software I've used and it's
worked flawlessly every time. My Do Amazing Things book has a section that
goes over the basics of using it. There is a software switch in my computer
that I have to toggle when I want to burn a DVD versus a CD, but I'm given a
message asking me about changing it when I work with a DVD, so it doesn't
seem to relate to your situation.

PapaJohn,

Sorry that I didn't get back to you. We had a lot of severe weather here
last evening. However, I do want to thank you for all your help!!! You were
the hero that saved the day that is for sure. I printed out this post, so
that I am able to split things up in the future. Also thank you for sending
those files. They rendered just fine. The only think that I have left todo
is upgrade My DVD to a newer version. When I go to burn it, it does its deal
and says, that the Another Application has exclusive access to the file
"C:\program files\sonic\mydvd\sonic.log Please shut down all other
applications, then click retry."
Nothing else is running!! I tried deleteing the log, that didn't work, now
I am going to uninstall and reinstall the sw. It is v5.2.1 500B03c
Other than this last stage, things did get a lot better with your
assistance, and again I thank you so much!!
Just a quick question for you. What do you think of the My Sonic software?
She is just using the version that came with the DVD burner. Since I haven't
ever worked with anything in this regard before and now have learned a great
deal. I unlike cd burning sw have now to learn what is out there and good
for buring DVD's.
