Some time ago I bought a computer with Windows ME. I then
upgraded to Windows 2000 and enjoy great performance from
my professional software programs, but miss being able to
play some of my old Windows 98/ME games. How can I
reformat my hard drive to give me the option to run
Windows 2000 Pro or ME and what are the drawbacks? I have
a 1.2GHz AMD Athelon machine with a 40GByte drive.

Fred,

This is how I done this for me, I recommend you do the same.

Buy a 4 to 6 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive on eBay for less than $10. It is best
to search your local area for hard drives, ask seller if pick up possible,
and that way you have a hard drive cheaply.

When installing your ME:

Disconnect your current hard drive, so that only that used $10 hard drive is
connected, install ME and then connect back your current hard drive, then of
course update your ME, install softare to it, etc... Also, if you were to
reinstall Windows you would disconnect your would be $10 hard drive, so that
only your current hard drive is connected, install windows, reconnect your
$10 hard drive. You do this because you don't want Windows ME installation
to see your Windows 2000, and vice versa. It is better this way, trust me.

Now, to boot into your ME you would select proper boot device from your
BIOS. On Biostar boards F9 key is available to press.

Also, install your would be hard drive as master on secondary IDE channel.
Never install two hard drives on same IDE channel (e.g. as complementary
Master and Slave)

You might also want to get another IDE controller. I recommend Siig.
www.siig.com, the best -- available on eBay perhaps.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install. Then start the
WinME install creating and installing to the system partition. (size it so
you have a bare minimum of 5 gB of space left for Windows 2000)

Then again restart the pc booting the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks
and install to the unallocated space.

Hi! Fred,
From Ormand,
In case you have some expense allowance and do something more ...
then I suggest that you buy Partition Magic(Version 8 is newest?)
or System Commander(Version 7 is newest?),
and additionally (hopefully) Norton Ghost.

( I am not retaliated with these vendors, so these are just for
your reference)
You can keep/hold any current status and data of Winnows 2000
Pro,
and in the future , you can install another Windows ....

Good Luck!

If you do not want to pay any expense, and you have time,
then just reinstall from the scratch,
say....
firstly, Format Hard Disk, and create Partition C, and D
then
secondly, Install Windows ME,
then Install Windows 2000 Pro,
That all, anyway it is time consuming.

If you can afford to pay a little bit for this purpose but do not have
much time,
then just buy anothe Hard Disk Unit and use it
( I suppose you do know how to handle this...)
Bye
