How to set default email address for contact w 2 email addresses?

The old version of outlook let me assign a default email address when I had a
contact with 2 or 3 different email addresses. That worked really well. Now
when I enter a 2nd email address, it appears as a 2nd contact in the address
book and I have to select which email address I want each time I email, which
takes a lot of time, when I only use the alternate email addresses about once
a year.
 
To what old version were you referring? Outlook has never provided a default
email address. Outlook Express and the long abandoned IMO mode of Outlook
(which was also Outlook Express address book) did that. Eve if it did allow
a default email address, you still had to select it somehow, right? Why
don't you just use autocompletion to save and reselect the same address?
 
Outlook 2000 allowed me to set a default email address within a contact. I
am already using autocompletion. It still prompts me with "there are 2
contacts..." and requires a selection.

Outlook 2000 in IMO was actually Outlook Express in disguise.
I still don't understand why you are having a problem, mostly because your
post is too vague. The ability to set a default email address still required
you to select an address somehow, and you have not indicated by which method
you are selecting addresses.
The new autocompletion feature in later versions of Outlook has completely
addressed this requirement. You are not using it, by the way. You are using
autoresolution. Start using autocompletion instead.

Perhaps I don't understand what auto completion is. When I click on tools,
then options, then email options, then advanced email options, boxes are
checked for both "Automatic name checking" and "Suggest names while
completing to To, CC, and Bcc fields"

How I 'select an address' is by typing in the name I want to send to in the
TO: field of the email. I just learned that once I have sent that person an
email, the subsequent times I use the same address it is handled differently
and you are right... it solves my problem.
