Run the command gpedit.msc to open the group policy. Then select user
Configuration->Administrative Template-> System. Then on the right panel
right click "Turn Off Autoplay" and go to properties. select the "Enabled"
radio button and apply.

Thank you, Ol??rin, I will study your recommendations. I will more deeply
study the items of the registry. I also meant to make some registry
correction and put i to Windows Start to renew the setting if any setting
is
not really permanent. I would also like to find some Microsoft reference
to
this problem (=what sets the "NoDriveTypeAutorun" item to default). I use
my
PC for my job and don't want to use any stupid decorations in the system.
I'll give information in some time, maybe in a new discussion thread.

How to set Autorun off permanently
Hello!
I don't want to get annoying messages when I connect USB Flash disk or put
a
DVD in the drive. I found that I can switch it off in the Registry - all
items with the name "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" (about 4 or 5 of them) set to
"FF"
value - Autorun off for all units. But after some time I always see that
the
values have been set to default and I receive the messages again. Maybe
some
autorepair function of XP. Do you somebody know what to do? Some better
setting (or some batch to overwrite the registry after every XP start)?
Thanks!
Re: How to set Autorun off permanently
Right clcik on the drive, select properties, go to the auto play tab ,
select take this action and the go down to the last action (ie the one
called take no action).

Well, it is the basic setting for common users but this setting doesn't
sustain and it is very annoying to set it repeatedly for all drives.
That's
why I searched some more efficient setting and found the setting in the
registry - you can set it for all drives. But now I see that this setting
is
also not permanent. I use CCleaner for cleaning the comp from crap and
registry issues, then SpeedMyPc and RegistryBooster from Uniblue
(Microsoft
recommended). None of these programs changes my registry setting so it
must
be some "autorepair" function in the system (XP Home SP2 + all updates)
which
after some time always sets "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" from the value "FF" hex
(all
devices Autorun off) to the default "91" hex. I would like to find the
solution how to inactivate it. It should be question for Microsoft but I
cannot find any free support at Microsoft.

Install Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
Tweak UI (part of package)
This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in
the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer
settings, taskbar settings, and more.
[and it allows you to turn off autorun/autoplay for every single drive
letter]

I also think so but which one is turning it off?
I also think so but which one is turning it off? None of the cleaning
programs does it so I think it could be some XP function.

Did you mistype the URL? That page shows no content relevant to this

returned back after some time. That's why I started to search some more
efective setting and I came to registry setting. Now I see that it is also
not enough. I offen use the cleaning programs as I wrote but as I checked
the
registry setting haven't changed after cleaning.

Re: How to set Autorun off permanently
Honza, try this (from Scott Dunn in Windows Secrets newsletter):
You seem fairly comfortable with editing the registry, but I wouldn't
recommend it to novices. And always back it up first.
Start Notepad and enter this text:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
@="@SYS
oesNotExist"
Close Notepad and save the file as something with a .reg extension, eg
NoAutoRun.reg.
In Windows Explorer, right-click NoAutoRun.reg and left-click Merge in the
drop-down menu, and confirm that yes, you are sure you want to merge.
This should stop the information in ALL autorun.inf files from starting
up -
flash drives, CDs, DVDs, other removable drives.
To revert, in Registry Editor navigate to IniFileMapping as specified
above,
click on any + sign there might be to expand, locate the AutoRun.inf icon,
right-click and left-click on Delete. Reboot may be necessary.
Let us know how you get on!
