How to seperate HP 4L and scanner?

Not sure if this is considered XP customizing but here goes:

How can I make my HP 4L printer and 5100C scanner to
work on seperate parallel ports?
Presently they work as recommended in a daisy-chain fashion
but get occasional hangups on the scanner and untrue error
messages though the job mostly gets done.
Employed drivers are sj263en and sj660mu.

Has anyone real experience on this?
Thanks,
Hans

Perhaps get a switch box, you can then plug the scanner in and the printer in
the switchbox and then plug the switch box into the parallel port on the
computer and run them individually.
I have two old printers set up like that.

Thanks for your reply.
But.. I think that this is not as simple.
The drivers are written for this combo all on one cable.
I don't really want to physically switch them.
I have 3 parallel ports available.
I would like to hear from anyone with the same hardware.
