how to select multiple files in Vista

This may sound like a dumb problem. - I do this a lot with XP. I select
multiple files (and folders) by using a combination of Ctrl and mouse-click.
Now, it seems, Microsoft pulled the plug on this feature. Using Vista
Ultimate x64, I am no longer able to move, delete or copy a group of files.
Personally, I find this restriction pathetic, or is this one of the two bugs
that is still left in Vista?

Thanks,

Gregor

I can select multiple files in some directories. I don't know why. Using the
Folder Options dialog, I restored all subdirectories to default settings
using "Restore Defaults" followed by "Apply". Still, in most subdirectories
selecting mulitple files is not working.

Hi,

That function was most certainly not implemented or restricted in Vista. I
would suspect that there is a video related problem, and updating the driver
to a release by the manufacturer may help.

Not a solution, but a possible alternate method.

Folder Options -> 'View' tab -> Advanced Settings:

"Use check boxes to select items"

You can hold the CTRL button and select with the mouse.

Here is way to reproduce this problem with my Windows Vista Ultimate x64
system from Dell using an ATI FireGL 3400 graphics board with drivers from
Microsoft (ATI hasn't released their FireGL drivers yet). Use an account
that works. Select "Use Windows classic folders" in the file manager. Go to
a subdirectory of type "documents" not "pictures". Change the settings under
"View" to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for
known files and folders". Hit "Apply to Folders". Voila, 'select all' in
menu item "Organize" is grayed out and nothing will bring it back until you
go to a folder of the same type, which is higher up in the hirachie, and
perform a "Reset Folders" followed by "Apply to Folders". Occasionally, this
fixes the problem. It is most definitely a bug in Vista's explorer. An issue
that is also described in the following thread:

http://help.lockergnome.com/vista/select-multiple-default-Download-folder-ftopict1502.html

Just interesting to realize that Microsoft's knowledge base is rather quiet
about this one. But maybe this is just number 1,323,434 on their list ;-)
