How to see styles of paragraphs in a pane on the left?

In Word 2003 I could get three panes up when editing a document:
- the text itself in the middle
- a narrow pane on the left showing against each paragraph the style it's in
- a pane on the right for selecting styles and for changing them

In Word 2007 I can get a Styles pane up on the right of the text, but I
can't see a way to get its paragraph styles shown in a pane on the left.

Can it still be done?

Yep. :)

Go to Office button > Word Options > Advanced, scroll down to the Display
section, and set the "Style area pane width in Draft and Outline views" to a
nonzero value (about 0.5" works well). As the option's name indicates, this
will appear only in Draft and Outline views, not in Print Layout view.

Something you might not have noticed: In the Style pane on the right, click
the second button at the bottom to open the Style Inspector. That's a new
feature in 2007 that's well worth investigating.

Hi Seamus,

In Word 2007 there are two panes related to styles. One is Styles task pane,
in which you can perform all the style-related tasks, including applying
styles. It can be opened by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S, or by clicking the
diagonal arrow (the launcher) at the bottom of the Styles group on the Home
tab of the Ribbon. The other is the Apply Styles task pane. It can be opened
or focus can be move to it by pressing Ctrl+Shift+S. In the Apply Styles task
pane, when you start typing the name of a style, the name will be completed
automatically by default, and then you can press Enter to apply it and return
focus to your text. The Apply Styles task pane thus offers you the
possibility of applying styles as you type without moving your hands away
from the keyboard.
