How to search *.PAS files for ASCII content?

I installed WinXP over Win2K. The content search of Windows file explorer has stopped working. How can I cause it to search for *.PAS files which have certain ASCII content?

I have done a little Googling but haven't found anything better than:

Search won't look for text in files that have no default 'association'
('open with') setting. Rightclick a .PAS and select Open_With, putting a
check in 'always use this...' and setting the file to open in Notepad, or
whatever you prefer. The only change you would notice, beyond including PAS
file in a text search, would be that a doubleclick would open them with that
app.
