Hi. I've got this scaner and I'm happy with its results on negative
jobs. But I've got problem with pretty good results scanning positive
materials, in my case - most used Fuji Velvia. Can someone help me
giving some tips and maybe presets I can start with these to fine
tunning my jobs. I'm using KM software for a while but if it helps I can
purchase SilverFast software.

Thanks for any tips,
Bogdan

Try Vuescan from hamrick.com. It's shareware so you can try before you
buy. Doesn't do the fancy editing of Silverfast, but it is much cheaper.
You just set it to capture the full range in the original and adjust
with your image editor software.

Can you be more specific as to what type of problems, exactly?

It may not be a scanner software problem at all. Usually isn't,
because native scanner software is more than sufficient especially if
combined with a good image editor.

Do you plan to do post processing with a dedicated image editor
afterwards?

It also depends on your context i.e. what level of quality are you
after? What's the end goal (print? archiving? web?) etc.

And for good reason... :-(

Vuescan is quite buggy and unreliable (no refunds!) which is why
critical options are disabled in the tryout version. Check this group
for a two-year Vuescan bug saga with 5400 II's predecessor.

Be that as it may, it's free to try - as is Silverfast - but in both
cases the acid test will be the full version.

However, if your problems are not scanner software related it will be
a waste or time and money, either way. That's why it's important to
first identify the nature of your problems.

Don.

Or then again don't as it doesn't like Minolta scanner and you'll
still be trying to get Vuescan to work with a Minolta this time next
year.

Give the Minolta software a good go before you even think of trying
anything else. I usually manage to get good results from a variety of
film, though I have considered Silverfast. Only reason I haven't gone
that route is that I can get what I need using the Minolta software
and see no need to spend extra money...at the moment.
