Seems like my Radeon 7000 was doing this at some point in it's life,
but not lately.

Now, every time I power down the PC my Sony digital display's (listed
as an "FP" in the ATI dialog") resolution reverts to something like
1024 x 768 from it's setting of 1600 x 1200.

Wouldn't be so bad if Windows didn't scramble the icons when it
happens... but I like a lot of icons on my desktop and rearranging them
every time the PC powers down is getting old.

SO, bottom line, has anybody:

I should add that on DisplayProperties|Settings|Advanced|Displays, the
embedded "Scheme" dialog appears tb disabled. I can see it's there,
but the buttons/labels are greyed out and it does not respond to mouse
actions.

That's an issue I had with the ATI drivers as well. nVidia drivers doesn't
have that problem. I ended up using UltraMon. Costs money to reg, great
program, but bottom line is that it shouldn't be necessary.

Ok, I don't have this kind of setup but it sounds to me like you need to
make sure XP is fed a proper inf file for your monitor and if necessary
disable DDC so that it doesn't ask the monitor what it can do but sticks
to what you tell it. I think the answer is close to this, if not this!
Cheers.
