XP Home Edition

Before backing up, I like to run Disk Cleanup, to reduce
the size of the BackUp file.

Unfortunately, this has the effect of having to re-enter
or recall info on web-sites where I've requested Windows
to save info.

Question is, how do I protect info? For example, how can
I avoid having to re-enter info on www.nytimes.com? I'm
sure it can be done by assigning a read-only status, but
how to do this?

Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Edit. Add the cookies you want to save by
hitting the "h" key with the cursor in the address area. Click Allow for
each. When you're done, close that box, click Advanced, Block Cookies.

Now you can do your cleaning and the cookies you added will be saved.

I suggest you leave the option set to block cookies and just add any in the
future when necessary.

Delete offline content when you clear the TIF's.
