Yes it is a pretty basic question, isn't it? And where should we look for
answers to basic questions....? That's right, the Help and Support Centre...

You can't because there is no program called Scandisk in Windows XP.
Scandisk was not meant for NT type operating systems. Use Chkdsk instead.

Hi ,
sorry but i am also trying to seek help on how to go about Graphic representation and chart -drawing in Excel..Any idea ?

Look for an Excel or office newsgroup, or refer to the Excel tutorial and
help features - which are in Excel.

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

Chkdsk was also apart of Windows 3.1

It wasn't really that it was part of Windows 3.1. It was rather
tha it was part of DOS, and Windows 3.1 ran on top of DOS.

For some odd reason it's been hidden as it has with Win2000.

You actually have to go to Start then Run and type in

chkdsk c: /f /r

That's if C: is the name of the drive you want to scan.

When you press OK a command window will appear and you will be asked if you
want to run CheckDisk next time you start your PC. The answer is Yes. It
will run next time your PC is booted.

If you have a second hard drive and run eg

chkdsk d: /f /r

(d is the name of my second hard drive) you will be asked 2 questions. Do
you want to dismount the volume (answer No) and Do you want to run checkdisk
next time your PC starts (answer Yes)

I made 2 batch files to do this.

Just open a notepad file.

Paste in one of the lines above.

Save it as eg CheckDiskC.bat

Make sure that the Save As Type box is set to something other than Text File
and that you end the filename with a dot then bat.

The file icon will look different from a normal notepad file

Now you can double click it and it will run. Put a shortcut to it in a
convenient place.

It's not "hidden." Why you'd expect Win2K or WinXp to be the same
as Win9x is totally beyond me.

Sad, but I *liked* 3.1. Remember how exciting it was back then?
