I recently repaired some sectors on my laptop hard drive
and would like to regularly monitor it to check if there
is an impending total failure on the horizon. Can someone
please explain in simple terms how I run Chkdsk or Scandsk?
I did a search for 'chkdsk', opened it, and the process
ran on my next reboot. However, the report flashed and
then disappeared before I had a chance to read it.

Chkdsk reports are stored in your Event Logger (evtvwr.exe).

Thanks, I found it. Can you give me an idea as
to what I should focus on here in order to determine
the health of my hard drive?

The main task of chkdsk is to check the health of your
file system. This is what the messages below refer to.
If you want to check the disk's physical health then you
should download and run the free diagnostic program
that your disk manufacturer makes available on his home
site.
