How to retain subscripting/superscripting with CONCATENATE

I wish to concatenate molecular formulas in Excell cells
in which there are subscripted numbers. For example,
Al2O3 in A1 with SiO2 in B1, where all the numbers in both
instances are formatted as subscripts. If in C1 I type
the formula =CONCATENATE(A1," + ",B1), all the subscripted
numbers revert to unsubscripted text. How can I avoid
having this happen?

Unfortunately, XL doesn't allow you to change character format in
calculated cells.

One potential workaround would be to use an event macro to
concatenate the cell contents, checking for character formatting and
applying the identical format.
