I have two computers in my home network. I have a portion of each drive
mounted to the other for backup purposes. The computers are configured to go
to sleep after 20 minutes of idle time. When they wake back up, they often
loose their network connection and I have to reboot them to get them to see
each other again.

I am using Windows Live OneCare and it seems the trouble started after using
this software, but I also configured them to go to sleep faster to conserve
energy...

Hi
If the network's devices go to sleep too, you lose the connection.
Look at the power saving of the network card (or any other spot involving
standby) and uncheck the power saving from the network devices.

Jack (MVP-Networking).

I spoke too soon. I continue to have problems with the two computers
maintaining network connections. Any other ideas?

I spoke too soon. Still having problems with network connections not working
after the computers come out of sleep. Any other ideas?

I have the same issue and have not yet found the cause. All PC's still
connect to internet, but no longer see each other.
Just out of curiosity have you tried resetting your router (instead of
rebooting) to see if that corrects the problem.
In my case, this does the tricks and all PC's can again see each other.
I am using a Netgear WGT624v1 with 3 PC's (2 XP and 1 Vista Ultimate) all
connected wireless.

I have a Netgear MR814v2. Just before I sent my last message, I went into
the router and told it to always give my two hardwired computers the same IP
address. I have two boxes hardwired and a third (work portable) that is
wireless, all XP.

The two hardwired have been of most interest to get working properly.

After the change, I tried it, but still had the problem of the two boxes
waking up and not seeing each other.

When your message came, I wondered if Netgear was the common denominator. I
went back and tried to recreate the problem, but so far, have not been able
to recreate the problem. Not only have I not been able to get it to fail,
the response times of accessing the remote mounts has been much better.

I wake up one box and try to access the other one. It fails, because the
other one is still asleep. I then wake up the other box and it quickly
responds.

I guess the earlier change took a little time to propogate or something...

So, this makes me think that the setting in Netgear was the problem or at
least the change I made was the cure. Since I don't mind hard setting these
two IP addresses, it works well for me.

I am still not totally convinced this is the cure, which is why I have been
slow to reply, but it sure looks good at this point.
