Attempting to change a shape after initial creation in PPT (Office 7)
frequently results in a new shape that is non-modifiable. (e.g., original
shape a square, attempt to make it slightly larger with mouse results in
shape changing to a long, thin rectangle that is not modifiable).

Frustrating- Any preference setting or some other tool that can turn this
off and allow cursor resize?

Right Click > Format Shape

TextBox > AutoFit /TURN OFF resize shape to fit text
