My system has got locked. we had not set pwd but unfortunately its locked.
Not sure if my son was medling with it. Now to reset its asking to insert
USB flash drive or removable disk. Its not working though that way. How do
I get it reset now.

Did you create a password reset disk before you got locked out?
Why not ask your son if he set a password and ask him for it?

Do you have another Administrative account on that computer? If you do, you
can login to that account and go into User Management and reset the password
from there.

No my son is 3 yr old and dont know what he set. Well I do not have
administrative acct also. But someone suggested me that my laptop is Toshiba
make and it has a problem of getting locked automatically. So we need
unscrew at the back remove the small cell and then connect it back and try.
This also resets the pwd. I shall try this today evening.

That's not going to help, from what you have described a password has been
set for Windows, removing the battery for a few minutes will reset a BIOS
password, but not the Windows password.

Check the site that Carey suggested, it should help.

I have not tried this on Vista yet but in XP Home you could boot to safe
mode using F8 at startup. Once in safe mode there was an Administrator
account that microsoft left with out a password log in and change the
password of your account.

Possible spam. Why direct the OP - in an answered, closed thread btw - to a
program hosted on a questionable website when the goal can be accomplished
natively in Windows?

You will probable downloasd and burn
PW reset or Pw guess CD somewhere else.

Vista password guessing CD could help.
Note thhat is not brute force, but can guess
only ( AFAIK ) subset of possible passwords,
i.e no special characters, only alphanumerical.

But I can be wrong.

reset windows logon password using usb flash drive

I have downloaded windows password key 8.0. It is a very quick and useful utility for resetting passwords. It not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password.
Just an easy to use bootable CD/DVD . It can also be used on a USB Flash Drive. http://www.lostwindowspassword.com/
