Hi there... a friend just had a couple of problems start recently that may
well be caused by a bad MSHTML.DLL file. I was trying to get her to try a
different copy of the file, but it appears to be protected beyond any means
of modification (in use by Windows). (Light bulb: try rebooting in MSDOS
mode maybe?) Is there any way to rename and replace this file without
exiting Windows?

Post the complete error.

What version of MSHTML.DLL is she running? What IE version? What Windows
version?

In all likelihood her system's been hijacked:

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the
preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/
for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Uninstall Yahoo Companion, if installed.

We've tried most of what you've suggested. At this point I'm just trying to
figure out how to manually replace MSHTML.DLL to see if that's where the
problem in fact is. Then we'll go from there for a better fix.

If it (MSHTML.DLL) ain't broke, don't fix it. Answering my questions will
help us help you help her.[/QUOTE]

Which is why I'm trying to figure out if it's broke.

Can anyone answer the original question?

Yes, if you'll answer *my* questions:

Windows version? IE version? MSHTML.DLL version?
