Did your computer come with a user's manual? I'll bet you find complete
instructions there. And on the computer manufacturer's website. And all
over the web.
As with any board component, you always handle the RAM by the edges only.
Don't put it down on a piece of paper which may contain static, especially
now that it is getting colder in the north. If the heat is on the dry air
will cause even more static electricity.
Press the RAM in at a 90 degree angle to the motherboard. If you press it
into the socket at an angle you will damage the RAM or the socket.
Get the correct RAM.

Unplug the computer and all the wires. Touch the metal case to
discharge any static electricty. You can get disposable wrist straps if
you're paranoid.
