How to replace high-lighted text

This question relates to Microsoft Word 2000.

I have high-lighted text in a Word document and wish to
replace each character of the high-lighted text with
an "X",
eg. "The quick fox jumps..."
becomes "The XXXXX fox XXXXX..".
('quick' and 'jumps' are high-lighted).

Is there a way of achieving this using the Find and
Replace utility? I have found several related tips from
the MVP site, regarding the F & R utility but was unable
to find one that deals with this specific topic.

Can anyone provide me with some hints?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks very much.

If you click on the More button in the Replace dialog, you will find under
Format the bottom option is Highlight. SO search for Highlight and Replace
with XXXX.

Terry, thanks very much for the prompt reply. What I am
trying to do is replace each character of the high-lighted
text with an 'X'. For example, if I have high-lighted the
word 'Microsoft', I wish to have it replaced by XXXXXXXXX.

Thanks for your patience.

Now that is more difficult because Highlight isn't a font attribute like say
bold or italic. If it is possible, on of the VBA gurus will be able to let
you know. Try reposting this to Word.VBA.Beginners and see if you can get
some assistance there.

Hi Ron,

It should still work, if you use ^? (= any character) or ^$ (= any letter) in "Find what" and "X" in "Replace with".

Regards,
Klaus

Terry,

Thanks for the valuable tips. I tried Klaus' suggestion
and used the Wildcard parameter in the F&R function and it
worked beautifully. I was able to replace every high-
lighted character(including spaces) with another character
of my choice. All I have to do now is create the Macro -
the easy part.. :-)

Once again....thanks for your assistance..

Ron

Klaus, my apologies...I should have thanked you for your
input when I posted my reply to Terry..

Thanks for your help; much appreciated.
