Hello,

I confess, I do post the question here to those who know, in order to avoid
more or less fruitful hours of search...
Better 1 who knows than 10 searching....

Here is my problem:
I have the following W2k domain:
1 unique server (" ROOT "), DC of YYYY.ZZZ, domain with no user and no
other machine.
2 servers, DC XXXX.YYYY.ZZZ, main domain, with all the users, machines,
etc....
These two machines have the following roles: the first one is only a DC ("
PDC "), the second one is an Exchange server (" EXCH ").

During the installation of the domain, old machines were used for the ROOT
and PDC servers. At the moment I have a budget to replace them, but I know
very well that it cannot be done so simply, in particular for ROOT, first
machine of the forest.....

So my first question is : What is the procedure to replace these machines by
two new ones??

In a second time, next year we should replace also the EXCH server by a
cluster.
Could you please tell me what the procedure is to keep the name of the
server, and avoid re-configuring all users' profiles???

Thank you in advance

Laurent

Hello,

The best thing to do in the root:

1. Transfer all roles to one of the DC (to create a placeholder) for the
root domain.

- - - transferring of the roles should be done by Dcpromo process

2. Once you have dcpromo one of the DCs down, you will force replication
so all other DCs know that that DC is no longer in AD.

3. Once you have forced replication, you should than be able to dcpromo
the DC back in (using the new hardware and the same computer name).

4. Once you have the new DC up and running, I would than DCpromo the
second DC and force replication.

5. Once replication has occured, you can then dcpromo up the new server
with the same old name.

Thanks,

Diana.
