How to repair system restore?

My friend's computer keeps crashing and she cannot get back to a system restore point. What can she do please? She is running Windows XP. This is very definately from a non-tekkie and I would be grateful if you could talk down to me and keep the information in idiot format! Many thanks from this grateful female. This is the first time I have used a newsgroup.

i.e what are you doing and what message(s) do you see

Will it load Windows in safe mode (pree f8 when Windows is starting up)? If
so, you can do a system restore from there.
