Windows 2000 Server. I want to rename my server, which is also a domain
controller. Normally I would use Control Panel-System-Network
Identification, but the properties button is blocked out and text below it
says,

Note - The identification of the computer cannot be changed because:
- The computer is a domain controller

What steps do I need to take to rename my server? I still want it to be a
domain controller, I just want to change its name. Thanks for the help.

You will have to run dcpromo and remove it as a domain controller first.
Then you can rename it and then re-run dcpromo once it has the new name.

That will work, just beware you do not want to do that if it is the only
domain controller in the domain, and if it is not you want to make sure
that at least one other domain controller is a Global Catalog server before
you dcpromo it and that the domain computers can locate another domain
controller via their dns preferred list in tcp/ip properties. --- Steve
