I recently purchased an HP Media Center. I note that there something north
of 50+ programs that load up on bootup. I'd like to remove those items that
I don't need, at least at startup....

Is there a description to identify what each of these items does? I've
removed a few items from the startup group using msconfig, and it looks like
there are many more are in the services group tab.
HP has not been of great help on this.... any pointers appreciated

Go to run, type:services.msc In msc, scroll to a service L.click,in the sub
menu
a description is listed, double click on it,you can select, disable or manual
start from auto start...Better know what services do what before you
change...

The Service and driver entries are present under this registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]

Each sub-key represents a driver or a Service. To modify/delete a 3rd party
service, click Start, Run and type REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor and
navigate to the above location. You should be able to identify them easily by
reading the "DisplayName" and "ImagePath" fields in the right-pane in the
Registry Editor.

Note: Before modifying / removing a Service, create a System Restore point
or a complete Registry backup, just in case something happens.

Blcak Viper had the best services breakdown but it's offline now. This site
should help you out fine, they expanded on Black Vipers lists

Good luck dusting those unnecessary services

The other two points were correct. In the event you’re not comfortable with
the Registry or the services tab, you can do the following:

Start, Run, type: MSCONFIG.
Select the startup tab and uncheck all that you do not need.
Select the services tab and do the same.

Un-checking items in the startup will only affect background applications.
It will not remove them it will only put them in a manual mode more or less.
The applications will only launch when you click on them.

The services tab dose the same thing as the services.msc but in a different
GUI with less options. This will disable the service and will not stop them
until you reboot. You may want to put some services in manual mode just to
help save you some time.
