Hi there.
does anybody have a clue how to remove the 'old' veresion
of messenger (called Windows M...) when installing
the 'new' version (MSN M...)
The install tells you to shut down the old version, but
it still remains on the PC, and still loads on startup
with the new one, so both are running, which is a bit
poor.
I do not think MS actually wants anyone to ever uninstall
it, which is fair enough i suppose, but you would at
least expect the new version to overwrite the old.
Thanks.

Greetings Boz,

MSN Messenger 6 is a separate application to Windows Messenger -- it does not upgrade Windows
Messenger.

You can remove Windows Messenger (the "old one"), but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run Windows Messenger
when Windows starts'. As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel,
Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger
in the components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed
Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This
won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN
Messenger to work properly.

Are you saying that MSN Messenger does not have the same
functionality as Windows Messenger? That it will not
allow Remote Assistance etc?

Is MSN merely an "Add-on" to Windows Messenger or an
application complete in itself?

I do not understand why MSN Messenger 6 is offered as an
Upgrade when it is clearly nothing of the sort. Since
installing it I have had endless problems with webcam and
voice, which were working fine beforehand. I am obviously
not alone in this.

Anyone know why we are having these problems? (Since
installing a Netgear ADSL modem on the network - I am in
the UK - Remote Support does not work at all. Netgear
stuff is designed for the US DSL market!)
