We have several 2000 web servers on different networks (intranet and
internet) and they don't have the dnsapi.dll running, just this one web
server.

The system log reports:

The system failed to register network adapter
with settings:
Adapter Name : {xxxxxxxxxxx}
Host Name : xxxxx
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : xxx.xxx.com
DNS server list :
x.x.x.x, x.x.x.x
Sent update to server : none
IP Address : x.x.x.x

The reason the DNS update request could not be completed was because of
a system problem. You can manually retry DNS registration of the
network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at
the command prompt.

But I don't want to register the DNS -- it isn't one. I don't see any
programs or windows components related to DNS functions, so I can't
remove it that easily.

Can someone tell me how to remove or disable it correctly?

To disable registration of a network adaptor on a machine that is NOT
running the DNS server service, and that is NOT a domain controller, simply
go into the NIC properties, IP properties, Advanced button, DNS tab, uncheck
the box to register this connetion.

If this is a domain controller, registration must be allowed, or be done
manually. I am assuming from your post these are just webservers that are
not part of a domain. The error you posted (although heavily edited), is
simply saying that it is trying send a registration request to the DNS
server listed in the machine's IP properties. If it is the ISP's address in
the message, then it means that is what is configured in IP properties and
the registration is being sent there.
