Hi all, had a reply to a post last week which was very helpful and will be
the answer to my failed DC demotion once I can work out one small thing. If
you have a quick peep at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=216498&product=nts40, under
the heading 'Procedure' action 4..."Type connections and press ENTER. This
menu is used to connect to the specific server where the changes occur."...I
am guessing this is the server that failed to remove it's metadata from the
AD or am I supposed to be connecting to the Global Catalogue/FSMO server and
running the commands?

Many thanks all

You should connect to an active, functional Domain Controller within your
domain. From this point you can clean out any extraneous data and have the
changes replicated to the rest of your domain.
