I installed IE8 and could not access any links past the >> sign, so
uninstalled it. Now I have the "shield" icon in my tray saying "Updates ready
to install". How do I get rid of it? Running XP-SP3 and IE7

Change your automatic updates to
"Download but let me decide to install"

Then click on the shield and choose the "custom" option.
You can then uncheck the updates you do not want.
When you do this you will be asked if you want to see that update again
and you can choose not to.

Richard: Thank you so much for the info! I did it and it removed the
"shield". I wouldn't mind installing IE8 if it would let me see all my
"links". It did seem faster than IE7.

Richard's suggestion might have stopped the nag to install IE8, but the
fairly large, downloaded installer's still on your computer. Here's what
you should have done:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect IE8 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Tip: You can do Step #2 now, if you want. <wink>

Hi PA-Bear:
Great suggestion! Thank you! Do you know the answer to why IE8 would not
display any of my links in the "overflow" area after the >> ? I would install
it if that was not a problem. I like to keep "up to date".

Thank you!

You can post your IE questions in microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general
