Greetings Chris,

You can remove Windows Messenger (the "old one"), but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run Windows Messenger
when Windows starts'. As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel,
Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger
in the components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed
Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This
won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN
Messenger to work properly.

I have kind of the same problem. I have removed it in
control panel and I have turned it of in the tools menu.

But as soon as I start Outlook it starts up again. After
that I can't close it down. I can log out though.

I would like to have it totally removed so it doesn't start
up at all.

What do I do?

Hi Egon,

Firstly, you'll need to disable Messenger in Outlook so that it doesn't automatically start
(even if you're going to install the entire application, you should still do this to avoid
conflicts). To do so, just open Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other
tab, and uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'. For Outlook Express, close
Outlook Express, and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

Then, if you do want to completely remove it (remember this will stop Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard and Application Sharing from working), close down Messenger if it's running (right
click the messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click
the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Thank you very much. It was Outlook Express that was the
problem. It is solved now.

By the way, I don't have the 'Enable Instant Messaging in
Microsoft Outlook' check box in my Outlook 2000.
