How to reinstall WMM 2.1 if already have SP2 + SP3

I started out with one Windows Movie Maker related problem, but now I
may have created a second one. (My computer has XP home edition with
SP3 installed.)

The first problem:

I had not used WMM in a few years, but when I tried to do so recently
I could not edit or play anything with it. I tried importing a variety
of file types--wmv, avi, mpg, but nothing I dragged down into the
storyboard would play in the viewer at all. I never saw anything like
it back when I used to use it a lot.

The second problem:

After some searching around on the web, I tried to reinstall WMM, but
to make the story short what I ended up reinstalling was WMM version
2.0. To my understanding the latest version is 2.1, and I would
imagine that this is what I had before.

So now my question is, how do I reinstall WMM version 2.1? Everything
I find on the web or at Microsoft tells one to "get SP2," which is
obviously not going to work for me since I already have that, plus the
next one. I started to try uninstalling SP3 to see if I could get to
the point where I could reinstall SP2, but decided not to based on the
warnings I was getting. Thanks for any suggestions!

I have the same problem, Movie maker did work good and 1 day I could not
import files anymore. Even mp3 songs did not work. I could not put anything
on the timeline als.
So I also downloaded the 2.0 but it did not work aether.
So I was saerching again for the 2.1 but cant find him, also when I look for
updates on microsoft they dont find it.
Now I updated my SP3, but still it is not working.
I put this question on a lot of forums but not anyone can help me.
I hope someone can help us,

Greetings,
Nancy

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

Actually, you could try unchecking all of the filters
and see if it improves the issue.

The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK
